In general, the environmental impact of a luminaire cannot be assessed based on a single attribute, such as quality. Instead, a multitude of criteria come into play, all of which must be considered across the product's entire lifecycle.
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), adopted as part of the EU Green Deal, specifies these sustainability aspects and establishes a regulatory framework.

Green Deal
The European Union has set itself the goal of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Europe is thus to become the first climate-neutral continent. To achieve this ambitious goal, comprehensive measures are planned in the areas of financial market regulation, transport, energy supply, industry, trade, agriculture and forestry. Existing legislation is to be adapted to the EU‘s climate goals.
Ecodesign Regulation
The Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/2020 sets, among other things, energy efficiency requirements for lighting products. The aim is to increase the efficiency of energy- related products, strengthen the circular economy and reduce environmental impacts and resource consumption.
Taxonomie Regulation
Taxonomy Regulation (EU) 2020/852 establishes a uniform classification system for economic activities that can be classified as environmentally sustainable. The aim is to channel investment into sustainable companies and technologies, thereby supporting the Green Deal. The EU Taxonomy sets out uniform criteria for assessing the environmental sustainability of various economic activities.
Product Development with Long-term Use in Mind
The requirements placed on modern lighting solutions are constantly evolving. In addition to quality, functionality and cost-effectiveness, aspects such as energy efficiency, repairability, replaceability and adaptability are also becoming increasingly important.
When developing new SCHUCH luminaires, we therefore consider a wide range of criteria geared towards reliable, long-term use. Our aim is to develop products that meet today’s requirements while also being able to respond flexibly to future technical or application-related changes.
All criteria are reviewed regularly and adjusted where necessary.
Basic requirements
recycled material content ≥ 50%
decomposability at end of life
recyclability ≥ 80%
modular design
interchangeability of ECG and LED modules
use of standardised Zhaga-compliant LED modules
upgradeability
spare parts availability at least 10 years
product guarantee at least 5 years
Additional requirements
100% recycled paper packaging
long service life
- Outdoor luminaires L90 > 100,000 hours
- Indoor luminaires L80 > 100,000 hours
high system efficiency
- Outdoor luminaires > 140 lm/W
- Indoor luminaires > 150 lm/W
ULOR = 0 for outdoor luminaires
Material Use
When selecting materials, we consider not only technical requirements but also the use of secondary raw materials. In particular, we focus on components that account for a significant proportion of the luminaire’s total weight.
Recycled materials are already used in selected SCHUCH luminaires today. In the VIA, for example, the recycled content across the complete luminaire is 70%. The die-cast aluminium housing is made using 100% recycled material.
Recyclability
A modular design can help to make it easier to separate different materials from one another at the end of a product’s service life. When developing new luminaires, we therefore also consider ease of disassembly and the possibility of directing the materials used towards suitable recycling processes.
Depending on the product and material selection, high recycling rates can be achieved.
Repairability & easy replacement of components
SCHUCH luminaires are designed for long-term use. In modular luminaires, components can be replaced by qualified personnel when required. With many products, this is also possible without tools.
For example, control gear, LED modules and other components can be replaced individually without having to replace the entire luminaire.
Maintenance-friendly
When developing our products, we place great emphasis on ease of installation, maintenance and servicing. Well-designed constructions and the simplest possible replacement of individual components can help to reduce maintenance requirements and support the long-term use of the luminaire.
Upgradeability, retrofittability & expandability with smart functions
Standardised interfaces and components create opportunities for technical adaptations and subsequent extensions. For example, the use of Zhaga-compliant LED modules ensures the greatest possible flexibility in the use of efficiency upgrades and new LED generations. Standardised Zhaga bases in the RFL luminaires, on the other hand, enable the use of sensors for autonomous or smart control with the aid of a light management system. The type of sensor and the time of installation can be selected freely.
This flexibility and broad availability provide long-term planning and investment security.
High energy efficiency
High energy efficiency is an important element of product development. The latest LED generations, efficient optics and application-appropriate light distribution create the conditions for efficient operation.
When combined with demand-based control or light management systems, energy consumption can be influenced further. The extent of any savings potential depends, among other things, on the initial situation, usage and specific control concept.
Long service life of the components & long duration of use of the luminaire
Thanks to the use of high-quality components from well-known brand manufacturers, SCHUCH luminaires have excellent service life values with L80>100,000 hours (for outdoor luminaires even L90>100,000 hours). With an average operating time of 4,200 hours per year for street luminaires, this corresponds to a period of almost 24 years. With 1-shift operation in the industrial sector, 34 years are achieved, with 2-shift operation at least 17 years and with round-the-clock operation still at least 11 years. However, the potential service life of a luminaire is considerably longer. To make full use of this long service life, all components are replaceable.
Long-term availability of replacement parts
The availability of spare parts for decades is standard at SCHUCH luminaires. Due to the high vertical range of manufacture, the renunciation of commercial goods (all SCHUCH luminaires are in-house developments) and the cooperation with renowned brand suppliers, the control of spare parts availability is largely in our hands. Even after a series has been discontinued, we guarantee the supply of spare parts for a period of at least 10 years.
Guarantee
The quality of our products and the satisfaction of our customers is our highest priority. We therefore grant a five-year guarantee on all catalogue products with a rated service life ≥ 50,000 hours. This quality promise stands for the quality of our luminaires, is valid from the date of invoice and is valid without registration.
Light Emissions & Dark Sky
Outdoor luminaires should be selected and positioned in such a way that disruptive light emissions into the environment are limited to a minimum or, wherever possible, avoided altogether. All SCHUCH outdoor luminaires meet this requirement. This is made possible, among other things, by special optics with precisely defined light control, shielding, time and demand-dependent controls as well as special light colours that effectively limit adverse light immissions. Only outdoor luminaires that emit no light into the night sky (ULOR = 0) can meet the strict requirements of the International Dark Sky Association (IDA).
